Tips & tricks
- The check runs from our edge servers, not your own connection — if you're troubleshooting a local network issue, a browser-based test can't diagnose that; it can only tell you whether the internet can reach the server.
- A HEAD request is tried first for speed; if the server rejects HEAD (some misconfigured servers do), a full GET is sent automatically — you'll always get an accurate status code either way.
- The check times out after 8 seconds. If a site is simply slow rather than down, you'll see TIMEOUT rather than UNREACHABLE — worth distinguishing when reporting an incident to a hosting provider.
- Private and loopback addresses (localhost, 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x) can't be checked from our servers — that's a security boundary, not a bug, since our edge has no route into your private network.
