How the DNS Lookup works

1

Enter a domain name (e.g. example.com) in the input field.

2

Select the record type from the dropdown: A, MX, CNAME, TXT, AAAA, or NS.

3

Click Lookup to query live DNS servers (via Cloudflare's DNS-over-HTTPS) and display all returned records.

4

View TTL values and multiple records for load-balanced or redundant configurations.

Tips & tricks

  • There's no "All" option to fetch every record type at once — query each type you need separately from the dropdown.
  • This tool queries Cloudflare's public DNS-over-HTTPS resolver, so results reflect Cloudflare's cache, not necessarily your own ISP's resolver.
  • A NOERROR status with zero answers means the domain exists but has no records of the type you queried — try a different type.
  • For SOA, PTR, CAA, or SRV records, this tool won't return results — use a resolver tool that supports those types instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What DNS record types can I look up with this tool?

A (IPv4 address), MX (mail server), CNAME (alias), TXT (verification, SPF, DKIM), AAAA (IPv6), and NS (nameservers) — these six are available in the dropdown. SOA, PTR, CAA, and SRV are not currently supported by this tool.

How long do DNS changes take to propagate?

DNS changes propagate based on the record's TTL (Time To Live). Low TTL (300 seconds) propagates in minutes. High TTL (86400 = 24 hours) takes up to 24 hours to update globally. Check the current TTL value in your lookup results.

How do I verify my SPF record is set up correctly?

Look up TXT records for your domain. Your SPF record starts with "v=spf1". A valid SPF might look like: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all. Use a dedicated SPF validator tool for detailed syntax checking.

What is a CNAME record and when should I use it?

A CNAME (Canonical Name) is an alias that points one domain to another: www.example.com → example.com. Use CNAMEs for subdomains pointing to CDNs or third-party services. You cannot use a CNAME on a bare domain (zone apex).

What is the difference between A and AAAA records?

A records hold IPv4 addresses (e.g. 93.184.216.34). AAAA records hold IPv6 addresses (e.g. 2606:2800:220:1:248:1893:25c8:1946). Sites with both A and AAAA records support dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 connections.

Is my data safe when using the DNS Lookup?

Yes. Your input is processed on Cloudflare's globally distributed edge network. Data is used only to generate your result and is never stored, logged, or shared with any third party.

How current is the data returned by the DNS Lookup?

The DNS Lookup fetches live data in real time each time you run it. Results reflect the current state of the server or domain at the moment of the request.

Why does the DNS Lookup sometimes return different results than other tools?

Results depend on the real-time state of the target server and DNS propagation, which can vary by geographic region and caching TTL. If you see inconsistencies, wait a few minutes and re-test — DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate fully worldwide.
