How the Character Counter works
Paste or type your text into the input area.
Character count, word count, and line count update instantly as you type.
Set a character limit in the field above the text area (defaults to 280) to see a progress bar tracking how close you are to it — set it to 0 for no limit.
The progress bar turns amber near the limit and red once you exceed it.
Tips & tricks
- There's no dropdown of platform presets (Twitter, SMS, meta description, etc.) — type your target limit yourself into the character limit field, which defaults to 280.
- There's no trim/whitespace-cleanup button — the counter only reports numbers, it doesn't modify your text.
- There's no byte count — only character count (Unicode code points), which differs from byte size for emoji and non-Latin scripts.
- Set the limit field to 0 to remove the limit entirely — the remaining-characters stat then shows ∞ and the progress bar stays empty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Twitter count all characters the same?
Twitter counts most characters as 1, but URLs are always counted as 23 characters regardless of actual length (t.co shortening). Emoji count as 2 characters on some platforms. This tool counts raw characters — it doesn't apply Twitter's URL-shortening adjustment automatically.
Is there a preset for Twitter, SMS, or meta description limits?
No — there's no dropdown of platform presets. Type the limit you want into the character limit field yourself (e.g. 280 for Twitter/X, 160 for SMS, 158 for a meta description); it defaults to 280.
What is the SMS character limit?
A standard SMS is 160 GSM-7 characters. If you use Unicode characters (emoji, accented letters, non-Latin scripts), the limit drops to 70 characters per segment. Multi-part SMS stitches segments together.
Does this tool show a byte count?
No — it shows character count, word count, and line count only. It doesn't calculate byte size, which would differ from character count for any non-ASCII text (Unicode characters like emoji or CJK script use multiple bytes each).
Can I count characters in multiple languages?
Yes. The counter works with all Unicode text including Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic, and emoji. The character count is in Unicode code points, not bytes.
Is my data safe when using the Character Counter?
Completely safe. The Character Counter processes everything locally in your browser. No input data, results, or usage information is ever transmitted to or stored on any server.
Is there a character or word limit for the Character Counter?
The Character Counter has no hard character limit — it processes text as large as your browser can handle, typically hundreds of thousands of characters. Very large inputs may be slower depending on your device.
Can the Character Counter process text in other languages?
Yes. The Character Counter handles all Unicode text correctly, including accented characters, CJK characters, Arabic, Cyrillic, and emoji. It works with any language that your browser renders, with no additional setup or language packs required.
