Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in metres (kg/m²). What Body Fat Percentage Actually Tells You#
Body fat percentage measures the proportion of your total mass that is adipose (fat) tissue. This is a direct measure of body composition — the ratio of fat to lean mass (muscle, bone, organs, water). For health, what matters is not just how much you weigh but what that weight is made of. Healthy Ranges for BMI and Body Fat by Category#

Body fat healthy ranges differ by sex because females carry essential fat at higher levels: for men, essential fat is approximately 3–5%, athlete range 6–13%, fitness 14–17%, acceptable 18–24%, obese 25% and above. Skeletal muscle is denser than fat — it occupies less volume per kilogram. This is not a flaw in the individual; it is a fundamental limitation of any weight-based metric used without context. For general health monitoring with no specific fitness goal: BMI provides a quick population-level reference. Track it annually or after significant weight changes. For a muscle-building programme: BMI and scale weight both increase as muscle grows; track body fat percentage to confirm fat is stable or decreasing while weight rises. For cardiovascular risk assessment: waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio are stronger predictors than BMI. For athletic performance: none of these metrics predict performance directly; training load, recovery, and functional movement assessments are more relevant.
